Six clean kills taken from 10-182 yards, each with a single shot confirms my confidence in the .357 Maximum as a fine choice for an Indiana deer rifle. I am already looking forward to the 2009 deer season. There are a host of other fine choices available when looking for a reliable deer rifle that fit within the guidelines in the state of Indiana. For me, personally, the .357 Maximum combined with Hornady’s 180 grain Single Shot Pistol Bullet just fills the requirement nicely. While it is a handloader’s only proposition, it’s well worth the effort. I confess most of my shots fall less than 100 yards. For me, the extra confidence of knowing that when the buck of my dreams steps out closer to the 200 yard mark, I can comfortably make that shot and know that I am within the limitations of the cartridge. I strongly believe in getting as close to the game as possible before making your shot. I can tell you that when you have a rifle that will shoot sub 3 inch groups at 200 yards, those less than 100 yards become chip shots. For me, confidence is half the battle when it comes to deer hunting.
I would be interested in hearing from anyone that has experience with the .357 Maximum as a rifle cartridge. Questions and comments are all welcome. As time goes on and hunting seasons come and go, I will continue to add information and pictures. Thanks for visiting my website and “Good Hunting”. Steven Cutter
